Don’t Doubt Mamma Tops 2016 Blazer Stakes Nominations

Tony McEvoy’s last start Let’s Elope Stakes winner Don’t Doubt Mamma headlines the Blazer Stakes 2016 nominations, ballot and all-in betting on the mares’ feature at Flemington on Turnbull Stakes Day this Sunday.

Running as one of five Group status races on the Sunday race program in Melbourne, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) attracted 20 quality nominations on Monday led by Not A Single Doubt four-year-old Don’t Doubt Mamma.

She has won three of her six starts at Flemington to date including the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) last start on September 10.

This weekend Don’t Doubt Mamma will chase back-to-back Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Group 2 wins in either the Blazer Stakes or earlier on Friday night having also been nominated for the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) over the Moonee Valley mile.

The bookies have her listed at an all-in price of $6.50 in pre-field Blazer Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, followed closely by French Emotion ($7.50).

Chris Waller prepares Snitzel five-year-old French Emotion who ran seventh in the Let’s Elope in a blanket finish, beaten only 1.3 lengths, before a last start second just a week later behind Alaskan Rose at Caulfield in a mares’ Benchmark 90.

She had 58kg that day but will drop to 55kg in the Blazer Stakes under set weights plus penalties conditions.

After Don’t Doubt Mamma the other highest rated of the Blazer Stakes nominations is Miss Gunpowder trained by Phillip Stokes.

The Pendragon four-year-old is yet to race at Flemington, but ran a brave third under a length off the winner in the same race that produces French Emotion.

At an equal $8 in all-in Blazer Stakes markets are the Lindsay Park-trained Catch A Fire and Telopea for in-form Victorian master trainer Darren Weir.

Catch A Fire is a four-year-old daughter of Sebring who won over 1200m at Moonee Valley before a close sixth in the Let’s Elope, while Pivotal six-year-old Telopea comes off an eighth to Voodoo Lad in last weekend’s Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).

She carried just 52kg and was beaten under three lengths as a $31 roughie, but will go up to 55kg if she is to run on the quick back-up in the Blazer Stakes field.

Manageress is the other most notable Let’s Elope Stakes graduate nominated for the Blazer Stakes on Sunday, the Cindy Alderson-trained Magnus five-year-old having run third just a half-length off Don’t Doubt Mamma.

That was her first run since the close second to Lucia Valentina in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington last Emirates Stakes Day and she is out to go one better than her second to La Passe in last year’s Blazer Stakes.

See below for the complete Blazer Stakes 2016 nominations and ballot before the final field and updated markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are released on Wednesday.
