2016 Furious Stakes Field Features I Am A Star

Shane Nichols’ Quezette Stakes winner I Am A Star is the headline final acceptor for Saturday’s Furious Stakes 2016 field at Randwick Racecourse on Chelmsford Stakes Day in Sydney.

One of five Group races on the card, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Fitzy & Wippa’s Fast & Furious Stakes (1200m) is due to run as Randwick Race 6 at 3:10pm (AEST).

Fourteen three-year-old fillies are in the mix, most notably the in-form I Am A Star from Mornington who Steven King is booked to ride from a gun barrier two draw.

The daughter of I Am Invincible won has won three of her four career starts to date, King aboard for the trio of victories, including the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) first-up at Caulfield in mid-August.

She could be Sydney-bound for the first time this weekend, but has also been accepted for a Moonee Valley run in Melbourne’s $120,000 Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) on Saturday as well.

If she stays in Victoria, the 2016 Thousand Guineas-nominated filly will have to overcome the outside alley in a 14-starter field.

Drawn one on her inside for the Furious Stakes is the Rick Worthington-trained Honesty Prevails in barrier three for her first run this season.

Jason Collett rides the nicely-bred daughter of Redoute’s Choice who hasn’t raced since her fifth when under three lengths off the winner Capitalist in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in March.

She trialled nicely at Warwick Farm over 1175m on August 26 and her sole win to date was first-up in the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on debut back in late January.

The inside alley in the Furious Stakes field meanwhile belongs to one of two Peter & Paul Snowden-trained hopefuls, Quick Feet.

The Northern Meteor filly, ninth in the Golden Slipper as a juvenile, has had two runs this campaign giving her a nice fitness edge.

The first was a fifth to Thronum on a Heavy (10) Randwick track in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m) before her third to Omei Sword in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 20.

Chris Waller’s Silver Shadow winner Omei Sword was among the original Furious Stakes nominations, but the early Thousand Guineas favourite was the notable non-acceptor saved for a later next-up run likely in Melbourne.

Team Snowden’s other representative had opposite luck in the Furious Stakes barrier draw with My Country to run first-up from gate 12 (of 14).

She has a strong record of three wins and a second from four starts to date, the Poet’s Voice filly last seen winning the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm in Brisbane on June 11.

On August 15 she trialled nicely at Rosehill with a third over 900m behind Prompt Response and is undefeated first-up having won both of her previous resuming runs.

Waller meanwhile might not have accepted for Omei Sword but he still has a strong line-up in the Furious Stakes field with three runners.

The stable has returning Foxwedge filly Foxplay (6), the undefeated daughter of Rip Van Winkle Awoke (13) and in-form Exceed And Excel filly Overstep (14) all in the mix.

Other notable chances include the Gary Moore-trained Silver Shadow Stakes runner-up Bacarella and the John O’Shea-trained Widden Stakes third placegetter from the summer Chipanda.
