The racing action in Adelaide is on in earnest this Saturday at Morphettville Parks with the running of the Penny Edition Stakes 2016, betting tips and odds for the weight-for-age Black-Type found below.

Headlining the card in South Australia on the weekend, the $100,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) features a full field of hopefuls led in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au by Ulmann ($3.40).

Early money is coming in for the Darren Weir-trained Sebring gelding who vies for three wins on the trot after back-to-back Melbourne wins.

His latest was over 1400m at Flemington on August 6 and while he goes up from 52kg that day to 59kg on the weekend, the bookies are taking no chances with the in-form galloper.

Four of his rivals are also under $10 in the current Penny Edition Stakes odds including the local Phillip Stokes-trained mare Runway Star ($4.50) who is Group 1 performed and who won the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in late May, and the Weir-trained Melbourne Cup top four placegetter from 2014 Signoff ($7.50) in his first run of the season with the Spring Cups in mind again.

So do the bookies have the Penny Edition Stakes tips correct or is there value further down the markets from the likes of reigning champion Riziz ($9.50) from the wide alley who comes off a Spring Stakes second from a fortnight ago or even perennial placegetter Rocket Commander ($11)?

#1 Signoff ($7.50)

So much class about this Weir-trained seven-year-old who has been lightly-raced due to injuries over the past couple of seasons. He is most famous for the 2014 Melbourne Cup fourth to Protectionist, and was last seen winning the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) in March by over six lengths. He was odds-on favourite that day in Adelaide, but looks better value for this. He’ll improve out over more distance with the 1400m short of his best, but is classy and doing all the right things ahead of a hopefully big season.

#14 Cavaloce ($10)

So many livewire chances fighting it out for the placings and with the rails run, Will Clarken’s Testa Rossa mare is one of the best. While most of the locals have the form at Morphettville, this six-year-old has a stellar record at Parks (8-4-1-1), which is a big advantage. She goes well over the distance (7-3-1-1) having won over it two back at the track, and was far from disgraced when only two lengths away fourth in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) on August 6. She’ll be better with 200m further to get there at her pet course.

#13 Rocket Commander ($11)

Wayne Francis & Glen Kent saddle-up this Court Command mare from Strathalbyn who has finished third in her four latest runs all in Adelaide. Included in those was a placing in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) when beaten under a length and the similarly close third when beaten three-quarters of a length in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m). The Spring Stakes was her latest and getting back to 1400m (9-4-2-0) is ideal.
