Fourteen runners remain in contention for Saturday’s Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse; a race that offers punters particularly good value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
The Darren Weir-trained Mahuta remains an outright $4.20 favourite in 2016 PB Lawrence Stakes betting markets with online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Suavito ($4.80) and Lord Of The Sky ($6).
Will Mahuta justify favouritism and win the 2016 PB Lawrence Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?
Multiple Group 1 winner Suavito is a proven first-up performer, is drawn ideally in barrier 7 and represents terrific value at 2016 PB Lawrence Stakes odds of $4.80 for success. The stable star for Nigel Blackiston, Suavito returned to racing this year for an impressive win in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield before progressing to third in her defence of the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 27th most notably. While failing to make anything in less-than ideal conditions at her next start, the Thorn Park mare will carry only 57kgs as a mare and has been confirmed to be partnered by Michael Walker.
The Cleaner is first-up at Caulfield on Saturday, was unlucky not to win the race in 2015 and is simply over the PB Lawrence Stakes odds at his current quote of $9 or $2.95 to finish in the first three. Claiming nineteen wins and sixteen minors through fifty-four career starts, the Savoire Vivre gelding progressed to success in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) following last year’s PB Lawrence, before he ran third in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and a credible seventh in his major target; the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m). The Cleaner has trialled well in the lead-up to his competitive return and should have no issue finding the fore of the field from barrier 2.
Darren Weir is confident that Mahuta will strip fitter from his run in the PB Lawrence Stakes, and believes the horse will be back to his best for the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in a fortnight. A standout through spring and summer, the Flying Spur gelding posted consecutive wins in the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m), Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) and Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m). Resuming from a freshen-up for success in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 3.y.o Guineas (1400m), Mahuta continued his winning form through the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) but has clearly has enough by the time he finished fourteenth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m). Having run third in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) first-up a fortnight ago, Mahuta will be partnered by Brad Rawiller from barrier 5 on Saturday.
