2016 Doomben 10,000 Ideal for Delectation

Trainer Chris Waller is pleased with the condition of Delectation leading into the 2016 Doomben 10,000 (1350m), and is confident the horse is primed for a big performance in the Group 1 feature in Brisbane on Saturday.

Delectation has produced a number of standout results for Waller through something of an inconsistent racing career highlighted by a strong run to deliver the world’s best sprinters defeat in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) in November last year.

Waller has booked James McDonald, who rode the Shamardal gelding to success in the Darley Classic, to return to the saddle at Doomben this weekend and is confident the leading hoop will play a pivotal role in the result.

“James is a great rider and has won a Group One on him when he beat the best in the world,” Waller told AAP.

“Jason has done a lot of work on Delectation and rode him well in the BTC Cup so it was a hard decision. Delectation is his own worst enemy because he hasn’t been settling this preparation.

“Hopefully things go his way on Saturday. The 10,000 is the race I’ve always had in mind but he couldn’t run over 1350 metres first-up so he needed to go to the BTC Cup.”

Delectation hit the line well for eighth in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) a fortnight ago, but will undoubtedly be offered a far-greater chance of success in the Doomben 10,000 from the ideal barrier 2.

“He has a soft draw (two) on Saturday and everything should suit,” Waller said.

“He has been enjoying Queensland and worked very well on Tuesday so he is ready.

“He just has to put it together.”

Delectation has posted a commendable five wins and seven minors through twenty-four competitive starts, since first appearing on course competitively in late 2013.

Resuming in 2015 in particularly smart form, Delectation ran second in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m); working his way towards a standout win in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) during The Championships.
