Godolphin runner Astern’s chances of success in the 2016 Golden Slipper took a blow when allocated the outside barrier on Tuesday, but co-trainer Darren Beadman believes the draw may be a blessing in disguise.
Astern is so-far unbeaten in two career starts but undoubtedly stamped himself as a serious Golden Slipper contender when beating a smart field to the line in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on February 20th.
Unlucky to miss a start in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago with a minor ailment, Beadman told Racing Ahead the team could not be more pleased with the son of Medaglia D’oro and believes his performance mustered in a recent barrier trial suggests he will be right in the finish of the 2016 Golden Slipper.
“He’s unbeaten the colt and his two wins to date have been raced on speed,” Beadman said.
“In all of his trials he gets out of the gates well so the beauty of drawing out there is he’s going to be last in and a fresh horse out of the gates.
“In a perfect world John (O’Shea, trainer) would have loved to have run him in that race but his hands were tied, so we’ve taken the next best option to trial him and he’s come out of that very well. You couldn’t be more pleased with the colt, the way he’s trained on.”
James McDonald will take the ride on Astern in the 2016 Golden Slipper, and Beadman believes the leading hoop’s confidence in the colt will make a difference in a success performance.
“He’s got a lot of faith in the horse and great confidence,” Beadman said.
“I think when you ride these good colts you just have to let them get into a nice rhythm and hopefully he kind find a nice position in the first half of the field.”
Trialling well in the lead-up to his competitive debut, Astern immediately stamped himself as a colt to follow when jogging home to win the Surf Meets The Turf Maiden (1000m) at Randwick on December 5th.
