2016 Phar Lap Stakes Tips & Selections

A single-figure field of three-year-olds face off in the Phar Lap Stakes 2016 on Coolmore Classic Day in Sydney this weekend, betting tips for the Rosehill clash found below.

Due to run as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:30pm (AEDT) there were originally 10 final acceptors for this season’s $175,000 Group 2 Cellarbrations Phar Lap Stakes (1500m).

Only nine remain however after the early scratching of Intrepid Way (7) with the updated Phar Lap Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Old North who jumps from barrier five with Sydney’s best James McDonald in the saddle.

The John O’Shea-trained Lonhro colt caught the eye first-up on March 2 at Warwick Farm with a nearly two length win over 1400m carrying 60.5kg, and will relish the drop to 56.5kg at set weights here.

His major rivals in an open Phar Lap Stakes betting market this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival are the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained High Chaparral filly Sacred Eye ($4.60), Surround Stakes runner-up last time out Single Gaze ($5.50) for Canberra’s Nick Olive and the undefeated filly Believe ($9.50) in gate six on the back of a win at the track and distance last month.

So can the favourite Old North continue his winning ways with a third on the trot or will one of the single-figure fillies in the mix get the job done in an upset Phar Lap Stakes result?

Our 2016 Phar Lap Stakes Trifecta Tip is #8 Single Gaze from #5 Old North and #10 Believe

1st

#8 Single Gaze ($5.50)

Really like the form surrounding this Not A Single Doubt filly who jumps from a nice barrier two draw on the weekend taking on the boys. She has run second in her two latest starts, the winners of both those race nice types. At the Gold Coast she was a length off Mahuta in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas and then a fortnight back she crossed second to Ghisoni who is current favourite for the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on Saturday. Ideal lead-up, gun barrier and will be fitter for that run.

2nd

#5 Old North ($2.80)

Definite claims for the favourite to salute from the barrier with McDonald staying on. He drops from 60.5kg to 56.5kg at set weights here, a big plus, and had nearly two lengths to spare over his rivals last time out over the 1400m. Only goes up 100m so the distance is a non-issue, plus looked to have improvement to come after that win.

3rd

#10 Believe ($9.50)

Anthony Cummings’ Fastnet Rock filly faces a steep rise in class here as she looks to continue an unbeaten run after winning her two career starts, the latest over this track and distance by a length on February 24. If she handles the grade she can be in the mix with Kerrin McEvoy staying on jumping one outside the favourite from barrier six.
