Adelaide’s Phillip Stokes will chase his first Blue Diamond Stakes win with smart filly Samara Dancer after she blitzed her Melbourne debut with a victory in Saturday’s 2016 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude at Caulfield Racecourse.
The daughter of Hinchinbrook showed promise last November on debut winning by over three lengths at Morphettville Parks, and was impressive again in a home trial over 1000m in early February.
Stokes brought her to Victoria for CF Orr Stakes Day where she took on a class field of her own kind in the $200,000 Group 2 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (1100m).
South Australian hoop Dom Tourneur also travelled over for the ride and had the eventual winner settled off the speed set by the Leon & Troy Crostens-trained Dream First who used her inside draw to move up on the speed and lead from the Robbie Griffiths-trained Not A Single Doubt filly Selenia who was one of the best out of the barriers.
Fellow Adelaide visitor Concealer, who won at Flemington in Group 3 company on Melbourne Cup Day last time in, meanwhile missed the kick by a couple of lengths and found herself out the back throughout.
On the turn for home Selenia was moving down the outside and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Quick Feet was also moving up fast.
With 200m left to travel however Tourneur came with Samara Dancer who pulled to the outside and hit the front showing off a devastating turn of foot.
The South Australian filly was super impressive and there were never any doubts from the home turn onwards as soon as she peeled out.
Samara Dancer ($4.20) was far too strong and beat home a fast finishing Concealer ($6) who was one of the most impressive in the race making up all the ground after missing the kick.
Outside hope in betting Stryker grey Miss Nymeria ($21), sixth in the Blue Diamond Preview on debut last time out, also caught the eye running a brave third with Ryan Maloney aboard from a wide barrier 12 of 13 draw.
The punters had it right with Samara Dancer one of the best backed runners of CF Orr Stakes Day shortening from as long as $16 earlier in the week before jumping at $4.20 through race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au.
“Very classy animal,” Tourneru said of the winner post-race.
“She travelled nice, I knew I was following the right horses and she did the rest.”
Stokes was also suitably impressed with his filly, who he has had a big wrap on for a while, and was confident the step-up to 1200m in the $1.5 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 27 would suit.
“She’s pretty good,” he assessed.
“She had to measure up to this lot and she did that and she’ll only get better.
“The 1200 (metres) will suit.”
He also added that Samara Dancer was a filly with the scope to run out a strong mile next time in and planned to target Melbourne’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) with her in the spring.
“She’ll be back for the Thousand Guineas as a three-year-old,” he said.
