Explosive Jack was far too good for his rivals...
Peter & Paul Snowden’s last start Group 3 winner Serene Majesty is drawn wide but still shapes up as a top chance of securing back-to-back Melbourne black-types this weekend in the Crockett Stakes 2015.
The Fastnet Rock filly is one of 12 three-year-olds making up the field for Moonee Valley Race 5 at 3:00pm (AEST) – the $120,000 Listed Antler Luggage Crockett Stakes (1200m) – on Cox Plate Day.
She has a wide barrier 10 draw to overcome but is in top form having won two of her past three starts to give her a gun record over the 1200m of two wins and a second from four attempts at the distance.
Sixth to Speak Fondly in the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) in Sydney two back, Serene Majesty had her first Melbourne run on October 10 at Caulfield and beat home Secret Agenda to win the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m).
Third placed in that same Caulfield Guineas Day showdown was another daughter of Fastnet Rock, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Harlem River who gets the chance to turn the tables on her last start conqueror in Saturday’s Crockett Stakes.
Winner of the Listed Tattersall’s 2YO Stakes (1400m) at the Gold Coast as a two-year-old during the winter, Harlem River should be fitter for her first-up run and has last year’s Cox Plate – Melbourne Cup winning jockey Ryan Moore aboard in gate four this weekend.
Moore meanwhile gets the chance to enjoy back-to-back wins in the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) aboard Aidan O’Brien-trained Irish raiders, backing up from his success aboard Adelaide in 2014 to partner the current $5 top fancy through Ladbrokes.com.au – home of Best Tote or SP + 20% on all Cox Plate Day races on Saturday – Highland Reel.
Along with Serene Majesty other notable last start winners in the Crockett Stakes field for Saturday include the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Haybah and Miss Gidget drawn in barriers eight and 11 respectively.
Stephen Baster rides Haybah who is a black-type winner in Adelaide from the autumn who won over 1200m at Caulfield on October 3 with the same hoop aboard.
Group 1 performed Gonski filly Miss Gidget, prepared at Cranbourne by Colin & Cindy Alderson, won first-up over 1109m at Seymour and returns to stakes racing for the first time since her ninth to Pride Of Dubai in February’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).
Other notable fillies lining up in Saturday’s showdown include the John O’Shea-trained Black Opal third placed Antelucan, Lake Geneva who has run third in four of her five starts over the distance for Team Hawkes and Peter Moody’s Show A Heart filly Valley Sweetheart who has Glen Boss aboard in barrier five on the back of her winning debut at Cranbourne over this distance on October 9.
