One of the key support races on a massive line-up this Caulfield Cup Day on the weekend is the 2015 Moonga Stakes, betting tips for the clash found below.
A dozen middle distance gallopers make up the field for Saturday’s $150,000 Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) that is due to run as Caulfield Race 7 at 4:20pm (AEST).
Of the 12 in the mix for the set weights plus penalties feature the favourites in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are running Best Tote or SP + 20% on all 10 Caulfield Cup Day races, at a firming $2.40 is the Robert Smerdon-trained Group 1 placegetter Under The Louvre.
The in-form Excellent Art stallion has a great Caulfield track record (7-2-3-1), is a three time placegetter from as many starts over the track and distance, and comes off a photo finish third to Stratum Star in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) from September 26.
He looks hard to beat dropping back in class for this weekend even from the wide barrier 12 of 12 draw for jockey Mark Zahra to overcome.
Joining the deserving favourite at single figures in Moonga Stakes betting this year are the likes of the John O’Shea-trained Vashka ($6.50) coming off a Sydney win in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) and another last start winner Worthy Cause ($9) from Queensland who saluted in black-type company over this distance at Flemington on Turnbull Stakes Day.
So will Under The Louvre get the job done for the punters from the outside alley or is there an upset Moonga Stakes result on the cards from the likes of Group 1 performer Famous Seamus ($12)?
The wide barrier aside, Smerdon’s top fancy ticks all the boxes and will be hard to beat so long as Zahra gives him the right ride from the nasty gate. Oozes class as proven in his Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes third at this track and distance three weeks ago. Was defeated a neck in a blanket finish that day and will have an easier job at this level. Loves Caulfield (7-2-3-1) and is yet to finish out of the money from his three previous 1400m runs at Caulfield. Form is too good to ignore and his finish from the back of the pack will be the winning factor.
Better mid-field draw for the John Zielke-trained Choisir four-year-old from the Sunshine State who is a 1400m specialist (4-3-1-0) including his last start Listed win over the distance at Flemington on October 4. Was a narrow win that day but he’s Group 1 performed back home when fifth in the Queensland Derby (2200m) in June and Craig Williams jumps on. Weight is a factor (57.5kg up from 54kg last time out) but had 57kg in the Derby so can handle the kilos on his day.
Rails draw gives this Joe Pride-trained Sydney visitor a big advantage third-up where the Fastnet Rock stallion should be nearing his peak. Glyn Schofield has the ride with the horse a gun over 1400m (6-2-2-0) and his last start seventh in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) behind stablemate Terravista not as bad as it reads with only 2.3 lengths separating him and the winner.
