Caulfield Guineas 2015 Betting Tips

A class line of up three-year-old colts and geldings face off for $1 million in total prize money in Melbourne’s feature race this weekend, the 2015 Caulfield Guineas, betting tips for the mile showdown found below.

There is a capacity line-up for this season’s $1 million Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) running as Race 9 at 5:40pm (AEST) this Saturday.

Current Caulfield Guineas betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering an exclusive Best Tote or SP + 20% on not just the four Group 1s but all Caulfield races this weekend, are firmly led by the Chris Waller-trained Press Statement ($2.70).

The Hinchinbrook colt, to be ridden by Hugh Bowman, has a wide gate 14 draw to overcome but is a proven Group 1 winner over the mile already having taken out the JJ Atkins as a two-year-old in Brisbane.

He also comes off a win in Sydney from late September when blowing away his rivals by an easy three lengths as the odds-on favourite in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m), which produced last year’s Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting To Win who completed the double.

The next best fancied in the Caulfield Guineas odds and the only other at single figures for the win is Ready For Victory paying $8 with Glen Boss aboard the Mick Price-trained More Than Ready colt who has winning form only up to 1000m to date.

So will the top two in the markets run the Caulfield Guineas quinella or is there value to be found tipping an upset from the likes of the Murray Baker-trained Group 1 winning Kiwi visitor Dal Cielo ($10) or Caulfield Guineas Prelude runner-up Tulsa ($12)?

Our 2015 Caulfield Guineas Trifecta Tip is #13 Tarzino from #1 Press Statement and #6 Bon Aurum

1st

#13 Tarzino ($13)

Money is coming for the longer-priced of local horseman Price’s two chances for the win with the odds firming right in from $41 to $13. The Tavistock colt is drawn a treat in barrier three with regular rider Craig Newitt staying on, the last Caulfield Guineas winner from that gate being All Too Hard (2012). A winner of two of his three starts to date, Tarzino is up in black-type company but has winning form at Caulfield over the mile – the same track and distance he returns to after a three-quarter length effort from barrier 16 of 16 here on September 19. He’s on the improve and if he can get a clear run from the gate he’ll be hard to hold off in the finish.

2nd

#1 Press Statement ($2.70)

Lots of boxes ticked by the Waller-trained favourite who races in Melbourne for the first time. The distance is a non-issue as he won the Group 1 in Brisbane over a mile as a two-year-old and was flying over 1500m in the Stan Fox for his big win last time out, now out to complete the same double as Shooting To Win last year. Has the wide barrier to overcome, and the last double-digit gate to produce a winner was 11 back in 2008 with Whobegotyou so there’s work to do for he and Bowman. That said, if he gets the luck in running from the barrier he’s the class horse and deserving favourite there to be beaten.

3rd

#6 Bon Aurum ($14)

Like the form out of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude where Ciaron Maher’s colt scored the narrow win from a wide barrier (12 of 13). He beat some good competition there for his second 1400m win on the trot from a wide alley and looks like he’ll handle the mile well. Drawn better for this in 10 with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle as he shoots to become the fifth Prelude winner since 2009 to win the Group 1.
