This Sunday in Melbourne Turnbull Stakes Day lights up Flemington Racecourse with a nine-race card including the Edward Manifold Stakes 2015, betting tips for the fillies’ feature found below.
There are 16 three-year-old fillies in the field for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m), favourite in the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au being Sacred Eye ($4).
Backed in from $4.60, the rails-drawn David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained daughter of High Chaparral is also the market mover as she prepares for just her third career run and first in stakes’ company.
Also at single figures for the win are the likes of 2015 Thousand Guineas hope for next weekend Don’t Doubt Mamma ($4.80) coming off a Caulfield win in similar company and fellow last start winner Badawiya ($6) drawn a treat in gate three with Damien Oliver to ride the Mick Price-trained Al Maher filly.
So will the top three in betting get the job done on way to bigger races this spring or is there value tipping an upset Edward Manifold Stakes result from the likes of Price’s other runner Sailing By ($6.50) or even last start Benalla winner Air Apparent ($26)?
1st
#7 Sailing By ($6.50)
This super-consistent Price-trained Fastnet Rock filly has the wide draw (12) but the class and time over the mile to overcome it as she steps up to black type company for the first time. She won at Sandown-Hillside back in early August over 1300m and has continued to be competitive s she runs over more distance with a third to Alaskan Rose over 1400m at Caulfield on August 29 and a last start second to Caulfield Guineas fancy Tarzino when taking on the boys over the mile on September 19. She deserves the shot in this and the distance looks ideal with Craig Newitt back in the saddle.
2nd
#11 Sacred Eye ($4)
Firming favourite for the Lindsay Park stables, Sacred Eye is a nicely-bred filly with improvement expected as she comes off a second to Don’t Doubt Mamma from September 19. She was defeated only a half-length that day and is tipped to be better over the extra metres this weekend. She looks to have plenty of upside and so long as she doesn’t get caught up from the inside alley, she could prove pretty tough to beat.
3rd
#6 Bengal Cat ($19)
Value bet in the race looks to be the John Sadler-trained Bengal Cat in gate seven with jockey Craig Williams riding the returning daughter of Bernardini who won over 1400m at the track in late June before a fourth in black-type company back at Flemington over the mile that she sees again here when beaten only one and a quarter lengths from a wide barrier 13 of 13 draw on July 11.
