2015 Queensland Day Plate Results: Mohave Wins the Last

The boys in blue at Godolphin enjoyed a win in the last on Queensland Oaks Day at Doomben Racecourse with honest gelding Mohave taking out the Queensland Day Plate 2015.

Ridden by James McDonald who was happy to finish the day on a high, the winning Exceed And Excel three-year-old appreciated getting a firmer track in Brisbane’s $100,000 Listed Nuturf Queensland Day Plate (1200m) having failed to find the line a number of times in recent Sydney runs in the wet.

“It’s good to finish on a high,” McDonald said after the win.

“Full credit to the team who took the blinkers off and it paid dividends.

“He’s a real honest little horse and he tries hard so he’s a pleasure to ride.

“He likes firm tracks, which he didn’t get in Sydney.”

Mywayorthehighway began brilliantly in the three-year-olds’ set weights clash and the Mick Mair-trained galloper led them round with Daniel Griffin in the saddle.

Settling behind the frontrunner was the eventual winner Mohave, coming off a fifth over 1200m on a Soft (7) at Rosehill from the start of the month, who was happy to get a trail into the race on the outside.

Outback Saga and the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Durendal, the in-form son of Medaglia D’Oro coming off back-to-back Caulfield wins, meanwhile battled it out for third and fourth during the run.

Race favourite Peggy Jean also looked to be getting a good run out wide with cover, the former Group 1 winning filly coming deep around the corner as they turned for home.

Coming down the straight the frontrunners were all in in at one stage or another while the local Kelso Wood-trained Show A Heart filly She’s Miss Devine started to fly down the fence and put herself into the race after winning over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight before.

Mohave ($8) fought hard though and went to the lead 100m out proving too good in the finish to beat home the inside runner She’s Miss Devine ($7) by half a length while Durendal ($5) crossed a further head away in third to finish off the Queensland Day Plate trifecta.

“He was entitled to get a little bit tired as they made us work for the win but he fought on really well,” McDonald said of the winner.

Also catching the eye on the line was the Chris Waller-trained Not A Single Doubt colt Good Project who put in a lovely trial for next weekend’s $400,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) back at Doomben on Stradbroke Handicap Day.

The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival continues next weekend so make sure you’ve got an account open with our preferred online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au to get in on the action at the right price!
