This weekend in Adelaide a top day’s racing runs at Morphettville Racecourse for The Goodwood Day including the SA Fillies Classic 2015 where one of the headline entries is Group 1 placed Bahamas.

This year’s $115,000 Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) attracted 21 three-year-old fillies at nomination stage on Monday including the Dan O’Sullivan-trained Teofilo grey Bahamas.

She has won just one of her six career starts to date but has been in excellent form this autumn including a brave last start third when only 1.5 lengths off the winner Delicacy in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on May 2.

The form of the Schweppes Oaks held last Saturday too with Delicacy beating the boys home in the SA Derby, which bodes well for Bahamas who drops back in class for her step up to the 2500m this weekend.

Other Schweppes Oaks graduates nominated for the SA Fillies Classic this Saturday include Melbourne raiders the Robert Smerdon-trained Ungrateful Ellen (5th) and John Moloney’s Sea Spray (6th).

A $12 chance through Ladbrokes.com.au to win the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) in Brisbane on May 30 at Doomben, Smerdon’s Grey Swallow filly Ungrateful Ellen ran fifth in the Oaks on the back of a mile win in Bendigo, which was just her second win from 10 starts now.

Sea Spray was beaten five lengths in the Oaks over the 2000m and has only won up to 1400m so the real test in the SA Fillies Classic for her will be how she handles the extra metres.

A host of other interstate visitors are also nominated for the staying showdown this weekend including the Robbie Laing-trained Cinnamon Carter who has a poor win rate but promising form, the Darren Weir-trained improver Lispenard and Robbie Laing’s Pentire filly Shandaara who comes off a win at Cranbourne but only over 1300m.

The other last start winners in the mix are then Andrew Noblet’s daughter of O’Reilly Kiwi Colleen who won over 2200m at Bendigo on May 1 and the Tony McEvoy-trained Monopole.

Based at Angaston the daughter of High Chaparral has just the one win on the board but it was over 2122m so she’s got staying ability that will get put to the test on the weekend should McEvoy accept for her in the SA Fillies Classic.

Third to Geegees Goldengirl in the Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) back in February, Monopole was disappointing at Morphettville on April 18 when 15th of 18 runners beaten over 20 lengths by Fitocracy in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) before her last start win at Gawler on May 7 to break her maiden status.

See below for the SA Fillies Classic 2015 nominations, the final field due for release on Wednesday so stay tuned.
