Thermal Current has justified his clear favouritism amongst punters in the final race at Morphettville this afternoon, producing a typically strong final straight sprint to take out the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m).
Jumping from the gates well, Thermal Current was settled in prime position on the heels of leaders Minaj and Streetcar Isabelle by jockey Dwayne Dunn and found a great rhythm.
Maintaining position rounding onto the final straight, the son of Exceed And Excel was quick to press forward and hit the front of the field with 200m to run, crossing the line ahead of a fast-finishing Yesterday’s Songs; Minaj running on for third.
Thermal Current opened at particularly generous DC McKay Stakes odds of $5 for success but experienced a huge amount of interest from punters over the last 48 hours and jumped as outright $4 favourite and market mover as a result.
A notable black type performer since first appearing on course in early 2013, Thermal Current posted several commendable results over a 2014/15 summer preparation and ended the seven start campaign a credible sixth in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) on January 31st.
Returning this time for a close second to Politeness in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) on April 18th, the gelding out of Soaressa is yet to be confirmed for a specific next point of call but may head to Brisbane for black type events through the Winter Racing Carnival.
Unlucky to be caught wide rounding onto the final straight, Yesterday’s Songs made up good late great and was brave in finishing second in the DC McKay Stakes.
Having set the pace for the entire race, Minaj was unable to muster the strength to take out the DC McKay Stakes but still laid a great account for herself in finishing third, particularly in having to cross from the wide barrier 11 from jump.
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best early odds on all major races remaining through the 2015 Adelaide Autumn Carnival.
