2015 Champagne Stakes Winner Pasadena Girl Oaks-Bound

Peter Moody has declared “anything is possible” including a Crown Oaks campaign in the spring for his brave and impressive Champagne Stakes 2015 winning filly Pasadena Girl.

The third filly in as many years to beat home the boys in the All Aged Stakes Day feature at Royal Randwick, Moody’s nicely-bred daughter of Savabeel came from the back to win this autumn’s $400,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at just her fourth start.

Originally when Moody purchased the youngster he thought she’d be coming to the races this time next year, but Pasadena Girl surprised the stable with her big attitude and the big engine inside her slight frame.

“She’s a little gem,” he declared.

“When I purchased her, I thought she’d be going to the races this time next year but she surprised us.

“She’s got an unbelievable attitude to racing.”

Earlier this autumn she kicked off her career with back-to-back Flemington wins in stakes’ company, before a Sydney debut when fourth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick last time out.

“It was only the heavy ground that cost her the Sires’,” Moody added.

“Today she ran super and she’s backed up with a very solid performance.

“She’s probably presented bigger and stronger even though she’s only a pony so it’s onwards and upwards from here.”

For the ninth time in 11 years the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes proved the form line to follow in the Champagne Stakes, Pasadena Girl backing up to eat up the mile and storm home over the final 200m.

There was early speed on in the Champagne Stakes with last weekend’s Fernhill Handicap winner The Barrister leading them around after settling, trying to go all-the-way.

He led from Takedown and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Street Rapper who ran the quinella in the Group 3 The Schweppervesence (1400m) at Rosehill last time out.

The favourite Pasadena Girl meanwhile took the sit and was third last on the outside of the course.

On the straight The Barrister was still in front but jockey Hugh Bowman quickly let the market mover Pasadena Girl ($2.80) rip down the outside and she came home very strongly along with Street Rapper ($10).

She was too good for him and the rest of the field however and won running away proving small in stature but boasting far too much late pace for her rivals.

John O’Shea’s ATC Sires’ Produce fifth placed Tarquin ($8) from the Godolphin stables then snared third late just pushing the front runner The Barrister out of the Champagne Stakes trifecta.

“What a thrill!” winning hoop Bowman said.

“She certainly didn’t let me down.

“I knew the (ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner) Pride Of Dubai form would stand up here.

“I think as a three-year-old we can expect big things from this filly.”

Having more than done her job this autumn, Pasadena Girl heads to the paddock for the winter a Group 1 winner with plenty more to come from her in the spring.

Early suggestions of what she’ll target upon her return from Moody are for a campaign aimed at the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick and the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield in October, and possibly even the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington during November’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“She’s a Flight Stakes, Thousand Guineas type of filly but she’s probably also got that scope (for the Oaks),” Moody said.

“The progeny of Savabeel have shown they can do anything.

“She just continues to surprise so anything is possible.”
