2015 Randwick Guineas Winner is Hallowed Crown

Hallowed Crown was too good for his rivals in the Randwick Guineas 2015 seeing out the mile without issue today in a dominant win for James & Bart Cummings ahead of taking on the older horses this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Co-trainer James Cummings is more than happy on the back of the gutsy victory in the $600,000 Group 1 Girvan Waugh Randwick Guineas (1600m) this weekend for ace Street Sense colt Hallowed Crown to head towards the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) during The Championships on April 4.

“Why wouldn’t we take on the older horses?” he asked after the win.

“He’s the best three-year-old in the country.”

Winner of the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) during the spring, Hallowed Crown was the ace three-year-old getting around last season.

He won round one first-up in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) on February 21 this autumn, and then became the second horse in as many years to complete the Hobartville Stakes – Randwick Guineas double following Dissident 12 months ago with his second Group 1 win this afternoon.

The season’s three best colts, and three of the best stallion prospects looking further ahead to careers in the breeding barn, ran the Randwick Guineas trifecta.

Hallowed Crown ($2.90) and his jockey Hugh Bowman had three-quarters of a length to spare after hitting the line strongly ahead of Hobartville Stakes runner-up Sweynesse ($3.90) with Peter & Paul Snowden’s Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting To Win ($2.60) in third a short head further back.

“The thing about this colt is he’s a winner and his record says that and I had full faith in him,” winning hoop Bowman said after the victory.

“Three good colts there but our horse has come out on top today.

“I’m sure there’s going to be great battles in the future but our colt deserves the number one pin at the moment.”

The small six-starter Randwick Guineas field came away as one this afternoon with Hallowed Crown going up on the inside, Shooting To Win going up with him while Sweynesse went back to settle towards the tail end of the field with Preferment.

Soon after settling though Blake Shinn kicked Shooting To Win up to take the lead from the eventual Randwick Guineas winner, while the John O’Shea-trained Lonhro colt Sweynesse was travelling fifth before dropping back to last just before the turn for home.

Sweynesse however got a beautiful run along the rails into third on the corner saving lots of ground to come up the inside and really challenge the front two colts.

Shooting To Win and Shinn looked to be sitting pretty 200m out before Hallowed Crown, who had more left in the tank after Bowman was happy to do the stalking earlier, drew away to charge home and leave Shooting To Win wanting late.

The Randwick Guineas was Hallowed Crown’s sixth win from seven starts and he put the critics who said he wouldn’t run out a strong mile to bed.

“I think he’s answered the critics and the doubters,” Cummings said.

“He’s even better over a mile!

“The horse knows nothing better than to just attack the line.”

Runner-up Sweynesse has the $500,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 21 written all over him, while both Hallowed Crown and Shooting To Win are likely to target the 2015 Doncaster Mile.

Hallowed Crown will go into the Doncaster via a next-up run in the $1 million Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Guineas on Slipper Day, March 21, as confirmed by the young Cummings.
