Overreach hasn’t been seen on a race field in just under 18 months, but leading jockey Tommy Berry is confident the mare can pick up where she left off – three wins and a third placing – in this Saturday’s Group 2 Anco Instant Turf Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield Racecourse.
The daughter of Exceed And Excel hasn’t had a start since a third placing in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) last April due to a combination of little problems that have kept her away from the track, but Berry says she is back in great form.
Punters are keen to see the mare return to racing, Ladbrokes.com.au is offering odds of $4 for her to win the 2014 Schillaci Stakes.
Berry partnered Overreach to a watershed win in the 2013 Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), nearly two lengths ahead of Sidestep, and told RSN’s Racing Ahead the Gai Waterhouse-trained sprinter is his best ride for Saturday.
“She’s spot on, I think she can return to the winner’s circle and remind everyone how good she is,” Berry said.
The four-year-old proved she hadn’t lost her magic after a fantastic six-length trial victory at Randwick last month.
“She didn’t quite come up as an early three-year-old, so they didn’t start her and put her back in the paddock, but that’s definitely rewarded them because she’s come back (well),” Berry continued.
“She’s a lot stronger, she’s holding weight quite well now and her trial a few weeks ago was explosive, winning it by six lengths under a hold.”
The 2014 Schillaci Stakes will be only the second Melbourne start for Overreach, but after spending a lot of time training there in the last 18 months Berry is confident she’ll warm to the racing style quickly.
“She’s a lot more seasoned now, she’s a lot more mature and she’s had a fair bit of time in Melbourne for this run to get used to going around in that direction,” he said.
If you want to back Overreach in the 2014 Schillaci Stakes you can’t lost at Ladbrokes.com.au with their cash refund promotion.
That’s right, you’ll either clean up or you’ll get another crack if you horse loses! If your first fixed-odds win bet in the Schillaci Stakes loses, you’ll get your money back straight back into your betting account. Don’t miss out.
