A field of 14 of the top stayers will run in the 2014 Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday, offering punters a variety of betting options and the chance to back a winner.

The Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2000m) is the supporting stayers race on the Guineas Day schedule, with many of the runners trying to earn their place in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) the following weekend.

There are six single figure hopefuls for the race at Ladbrokes.com.au led by German international Protectionist at $4.40.

The Andreas Wohler-trained horse has proven successful over big distances and is in great from following two Group Two wins in Germany his last time out over 2400m and 3000m.

Craig Williams will ride the five-year-old home barrier two, but the pair must be wary of the 59kg to be carried, which is up to six kilos heavier than his 13 rivals.

With five more single figure bets available for the 2014 Herbert Power Stakes, it might be hard to back a winner. Here we will present our top three:

• #3 Bonfire ($7) – Gai Waterhouse’s gelding will jump from barrier four and is in good form following three placings from his spring starts so far. Third in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) his last time out, the six-year-old can definitely stay the distance.
• #2 Sangster ($9) – This gelding has drawn wide in barrier 10 but a runner-up in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) his last time out should help him come across the line.
• #4 Lord Van Percy ($9.50) – Andrew Balding’s gelding will jump from barrier four with star jockey Kerrin McEvoy to ride. Has only had one spring start this season but it was a fast-finishing second in the Ebor Handicap (2800m) in August, which should put him right on track for the Herbert Power.

Albonetti ($13) is the market mover of the betting field, offering lucrative double digit odds. The five-year-old mare has had a fairly successful spring season following a win at Morphettville and a Listed Balaklava Cup (1600m) third. He stepped up in distance last month for the Naturalism Stakes, in which he just missed out on a placing a short neck-head.
