Jumping as a rank outsider at Rosehill Gardens this afternoon, Hoylonny has displayed a keen turn of foot to overcome a classy field and win the Dooleys Handicap (1800m) with relative ease from Bonfire and Single.
Jumping from the gates well, the Lonhro gelding settled well off the pace of early leaders and resounding favourites Evangelist, Black Jag and Disclaimer; who set a notably quick tempo over the back straight and rounding the final bend.
Finding the final straight still well off the pace, jockey Tye Angland successfully steered the six-year-old through the field, taking up the pace 150m from home and maintaining a strong sprint to the line.
Trainer Chris Waller was understandably pleased with Hoylonny’s performance in the 2014 Dooleys Handicap and underlined the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) on September 5th as the next point of call.
“Went to the paddock for a week after Grafton and we’ve just kept him fresh, looking at the Wyong Cup in 20 days’ time,” Waller said immediately after the Dooleys Handicap.
“He jumped well today; I thought he’d jump back to last but he actually got into a spot and Tye was able to ride a race on him.
“I guess changing jockeys round and trying different things and he won.”
Angland delivered a typically well-timed ride on Hoylonny in the Dooleys Handicap and was quick to lay the praise on his partner’s impressive start following the race.
“He jumped really good today and I had to drag him back to get him in position,” Angland said after dismounting.
“When Blake Shinn (Iggi Pop) took off about 6 or 700 that really helped me – injected a bit of speed in the race and I was able to cut the corner and ride for luck.
“I came up the inside of Black Jag, he wasn’t going as well as I thought he was and I was able to push him out and he was too good.”
Having to overcome the wide and awkward barrier 10 and the third-highest handicap of 59.5kgs, Hoylonny delivered Ladbrokes.com.au punters exceptional odds of $31 in winning the 2014 Dooleys Handicap.
