Rank outsider Ellawisdom has produced an incredible turn of foot to storm home and win the Listed Bright Shadow Quality (1200m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse this afternoon, ahead of Avaladyluck and Saturn Rock.
Jumping from the gates only fairly, the Top Echelon mare settled well within the pack, nearly eight lengths off the pace of early leaders Zippity Lass, La Tikka Rosa and Little Brown Horse, who set a noticeably quick tempo over the back straight and rounding the final bend.
Finding the final straight still well and truly out of contention, Ellawisdom quickly spooled up and displayed a keen turn of foot to flash down the outside and finish more than a length in the clear.
Trainer Trevor Thomas was understandably thrilled with Ellawisdom’s performance in the 2014 Bright Shadow Quality, particularly after a number of disappointing starts in recent events.
“It was great to see, she’s always threatened to do it, but it’s one of those things – you keep sending her round and you keep going home disappointed; she runs sensational sectionals every time and comes out the loser, so just great to see her put it together today,”
“She goes well fresh, but nine times out of 10 she just beats herself, you’ve just got to have her right on the day because she’s got all the ability in the world.”
Contesting her ninth competitive start this time in when claiming the Bright Shadow Quality, Thomas revealed the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) on June 28th as the likely major target for the Top Echelon mare before returning to the spelling paddock.
“Probably the Glasshouse is the ideal one; we’ll toss around a couple of different ideas, but the Glasshouse is probably the main goal,” Thomas added.
Jockey Rick McMahon delivered a perfectly timed ride on Ellawisdom in the 2014 Bright Shadow Quality and revealed he was confident of success almost immediately after jumping this afternoon.
“She came out pretty good, probably too good,”
”She’s got to get to the outside over them otherwise she won’t go, so I had to drag her back to last.
“There was no tempo on paper, but when they think there’s no tempo they put a bit of speed on so it worked out good for her.
“Just before we straightened I just tacked onto the back of Brenton Avdulla’s mount (Single Style) and it was just a matter of going through to motions after that.
“To be honest she was never going to get beaten – I just cruised.”
