The action of The Goodwood Day 2014 in Adelaide has kicked off with the Mick Price-trained Moonovermanhattan winning the $115,000 Group 3 Darley National Stakes (1200m) in their maiden run.
A diminutive field of just eight two-year-olds faced off in the Darley National Stakes field today, and in an upset result Moonovermanhattan ($10) held on for a brave finish to defeat visiting Victorian filly Not A Happy Camper, having just their second career start, by a nose.
The Peter Moody-trained Street Cry filly Sweet And Speedy, who won at Sale in a race Not A Happy Camper finished fourth in on debut, then got up for third to finish out the opening Goodwood Day trifecta.
There was early controversy marring the race meanwhile as the favourite Bullpit rared up just as they were about to release the gates.
Shortie in the markets nearing odds-on territory, the Danny O’Brien-trained Speed ‘n’ Power gelding came via a win at the track in the Listed Port Adelaide Stakes (1050m) a fortnight ago.
They were well fancied to make it two on the trot however they nearly didn’t run after getting both their feet up over the gates before the jump.
Removed from the stalls they were vetted and galloped but passed fit to run in a controversial decision.
Soon after jumping though it became apparent they weren’t the same horse from last run where they led, this time going back to second last.
It was the subsequent winner Moonovermanhattan then who was one of the best out of the barriers, the Manhattan Rain colt getting to the front to lead in an all-the-way win for Price and jockey Damien Oliver.
All along Not A Happy Camper was trailing the frontrunner, the daughter of Not A Single Doubt racing out wide before moving up to challenge.
While Newitt tried to make his move on Bullpit approaching the turn they didn’t finish off and were never really in contention.
Instead it became a two horse battle between Moonovermanhattan and Not A Happy Camper who went stride-for-stride over the closing stages, the latter just not able to run down the brave winner who fought back and held on.
Remember there’s still time to bet on the big one in South Australia this afternoon with the $500,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) running as Race 7.
