Bart & James Cummings’ last start Fireball Stakes winner Shamalia will look to keep her outstanding record going this Saturday having been nominated for the Darby Munro Stakes 2014 at Rosehill.
One of nine features on an all-black-type program for Rosehill Guineas Day on the weekend, this year’s $125,000 Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) drew 16 three-year-olds at nomination stage.
Among those are four last start winners including the lightly-raced Shamalia.
Shamardal filly Shamalia won her opening two career starts during the summer at Randwick before stepping up in class to finish fifth behind Spirits Dance in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield last month.
After her run in Melbourne she returned back home last start on March 15 and posted her third win from four career starts narrowly defeating Sidestep in the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m).
If accepted she’ll be after another win in the Darby Munro against a similar class of rivals including the Peter Snowden-trained Fireball runner-up Sidestep.
Exceed And Excel colt Sidestep was beaten by the narrowest of margins when first-up in the Fireball Stakes, their first run in four months before which they were outclassed in the VRC Sprint Classic crossing 10th to Buffering.
They have plenty of Group 1 experience having also run sixth to Zoustar in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and fourth to the same Chris Waller-trained champ in the Golden Rose Stakes last year as a three-year-old.
Their Group 1 racing also goes back to their juvenile season when second to Overreach in the 2013 Golden Slipper.
Also coming via a nice run in the Fireball are third and fourth placegetters Boss Lane and Shaft filly Flight Academy.
The other three last start winners nominated for the Darby Munro meanwhile are then the returning Chris Waller-trained Calming Influence, Havana who won first-up at Canterbury by four lengths and the Mick Price-trained Jazz Song who is also nominated for the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes on Saturday.
Commands filly Calming Influence hasn’t raced since December when they posted back-to-back Sydney wins, Saturday their second black type assignment following a fifth to Romantic Moon in the Group 3 Sweet Embrace Stakes 12 months ago.
Fastnet Rock filly Jazz Song meanwhile has had just the three career starts to date, but they have won two of those most recently resuming with a Moonee Valley victory in February taking out the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes over the 1200m.
Also in the mix are the likes of the David Hayes-trained Group 1 performer Fast ‘N’ Rocking who ran second to Miracles Of Life in the 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes, last spring’s Flight Stakes third placegetter Bound For Earth coming off a Group 2 Angus Armanaso Stakes fourth in Melbourne and the in-form Sweet Kiss.
