Michael Kent’s progressive young filly Scratchy Bottom has opened top of the odds for tonight’s major at Moonee Valley Racecourse, the 2014 Alister Clark Stakes.

The daughter of Sebring is one of 14 three-year-old staying types set to face off under the lights in this year’s edition of the $220,000 Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m), which is due to run as Race 6 at 9:15pm (AEST).

An early scratching from the field #4 Late Charge has also seen the first emergency #15 The Terricks ($17) get a run from the second widest barrier (14) in their first black type assignment.

A winner of two of her four career starts to date, Scratchy Bottom comes off a fourth to Solicit in the Group 3 The Mittys Vanity (1400m) at Flemington a month ago.

She now sits top of the Alister Clark Stakes odds paying $4.40 to win her first Group race, the step up in distance set to suit.

Hot on her heels is then #3 Surge Ahead out wide in barrier 12 paying $5.

Anthony Cummings’ Danehill Dancer gelding is third-up for the season, their latest start a credible sixth when defeated under two lengths by the heroic Shamus Award in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) where they were swamped late by some classy types over the mile.

The other single figure fancies in the mix are then:

  • #1 Vilanova ($7.50) – Chris Waller-trained Commands gelding comes off a good win in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield where they appreciated the Melbourne way of running which they get again here
  • #5 Pheidon ($8) – Gai Waterhouse’s Al Maher three-year-old up in class here after good runs around Sydney, most recently a Canterbury third over 1900m from last month, lightly raced and on the up-and-up
  • #7 Bring Something ($8.50) – Cranbourne-based son of Sebring comes via two Group 2 runs in the Autumn Caulfield Stakes and Classic running sixth and fifth respectively with the extra distance here to see an improved effort

Also in the mix at slightly more generous prices are then the likes of last start Sandown winner Cadillac Mountain ($10) for Peter Moody drawn ideally in barrier two and #12 Bardem ($11) out to improve on their Australian Guineas 12th a fortnight ago.
