Catkins Confirmed for 2014 Wiggle Stakes

A talented field of 12 has been confirmed to line up for the 2014 Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm this weekend, including in-form sprinter Catkins (barrier 6).

Catkins has been arguably one of the most consistent performers in Australian racing since debuting on track in January 2012, amassing nine wins and six places from only 18 starts.

Having finished no worse than third in six races throughout her 2013 spring preparation, the classy Dubawi mare scored victories in the Group 3 Sportingbet Sprint (1200m) and Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) before closing her memorable campaign an unlucky second behind Red Tracer in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).

Trainer Chris Waller has been pleased with manor in which Catkins has returned to the track in 2014 and is confident of the talented four-year-old can build off a great first-up win in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) in the Wiggle Stakes this weekend.

Waller will also saddle classy five-year-old She’s Clean in the 2014 Wiggle Stakes, and while finishing off the pace in sixth behind Lilliburlero in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes first-up on February 22nd, is confident of a vastly improved run from the Redoute’s Choice mare this weekend after drawing the ideal barrier 4.

2012 Crown Oaks Champions Dear Demi has been confirmed to make her 2014 debut in the Wiggle Stakes this weekend and will line up in prime form following two strong barrier trials in February.

Despite finishing her 2013 spring preparation a disappointing 19th behind Fiorente in the Emirates Melbourne Cup, trainer Clarry Conners is confident the talented Dehere mare will quickly return to the competitive form that returned a strong third in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) and an unlucky second behind Side Glance in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) last preparation.

Kris Lees-trained Sharnee Rose produced a strong turn of foot to finish a competitive fourth behind Catkins in the Breeders Classic first-up, however will have to overcome the awkward barrier 12 if she is to figure in good position at the close of the 2014 Wiggle Stakes.

Lees has outlined a busy autumn preparation for the well-trialled daughter of Nadeem, with appearances is the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) and Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) figuring as major targets.

Fire Up Fifi, who has also been set on a course geared towards the 2014 Queen Of The Turf Stakes, was unable to justify favouritism in the Listed Falvelon (1200m) at Eagle Farm first-up and will need to find clear passage early if any chance in the Wiggle Stakes on Saturday having drawn barrier 8.

Gai Waterhouse-trained pair Miss Stellabelle (barrier 2) and Diamond Drille (barrier 1) have also been confirmed for the 2014 Wiggle Stakes, and will be joined by Jolie Bay (barrier 7), Scorpio Queen (barrier 10), Wistful (barrier 11), Any Day Will Do (barrier 3) and She’s A Girl (barrier 9).
