Despite drawing the extreme outside barrier for the 2013 Doomben 10,000 this weekend, Anthony Cummings’ BTC Cup winning colt Your Song remains the firm favourite to win the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival showdown.

The Fastnet Rock three-year-old came up with the ‘visitor’s draw’ for Saturday’s $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) with barrier 15 of 15.
It is a far cry from the sweet gate five (of 11) gate they jumped from first-up on May 11, thriving on the rain-affected course at Eagle Farm to post an easy five length victory over fellow Doomben 10,000 rivals Rain Affair (2nd), Better Than Ready (3rd) and Buffering (4th).
The bookies are tipping them to overcome the wide barrier however with Your Song paying $3 in the Doomben 10,000 betting markets to complete the BTC Cup – 10,000 double won 12 months ago by Sea Siren.
There are then three other single-figure fancies in the markets aside from Your Song with:
- #2 Buffering ($4.60) – Rob Heathcote’s perennial Group 1 placegetter also wide in gate 12, comes off a distant fourth in the BTC Cup but rain didn’t suit and you don’t earn $2.2 million without a Group 1 win not working hard
- #10 Epaulette ($5) – Peter Snowden-trained Commands colt hasn’t run since their sixth in the All Aged Stakes, Group 1 Golden Rose winner against their own age, distance should suit and has class and now the draw (4)
- #4 Rain Affair ($7.50) – Another nicely-drawn hopeful (barrier five), Joe Pride’s in-form stable star comes off four Group 1 runs including their All Aged second and BTC Cup second last start
Other longer priced hopes with claims for an upset then include the John O’Shea-trained Steps In Time ($14), the locally-trained BTC Cup third placegetter Better Than Ready ($14) drawn in the race’s most successful barrier (one) and the defending Doomben 10,000 winner Sea Siren ($18) also prepared by O’Shea.
