Last start ATC Sires Produce Stakes winning filly Guelph has opened the pronounced favourite in a classy field of 14 two-year-olds accepted for this Saturday’s Champagne Stakes 2013 at Royal Randwick.

One of the three Group 1 features on the Sydney Cup Day program in 2013, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon 150th Champagne Stakes (1600m) looks Exceed And Excel filly Guelph’s for the taking after her easy win over a very similar field in the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at the track last start.
Her ideal lead-up form, indications she will easily get the mile done and dusted, a perfect gate six draw and plenty of class have seen Guelph open top of the Champagne Stakes odds at a quote of $2.30.
Three of her competitors are also under double-figures in the Champagne Stakes betting markets with:
- #2 Criterion ($6) – David Payne’s promising Sebring colt enjoyed two good stakes wins earlier this prep when taking out Canberra’s Black Opal Stakes and then the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) before their credible Golden Slipper sixth in the wet, will improve on a firmer track and over the extra distance
- #3 Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($6.50) – Second to Criterion in the Todman this Fastnet Rock colt from David Hayes’ stables also ran a slashing second in the Blue Diamond Stakes in February and was fifth in the Golden Sipper half a length ahead of the Todman winner, tipped for another big run here
- #12 Scandiva ($6.50) – Anthony Cummings-trained filly enjoyed two Sydney wins in March including the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) before coming within three quarters of Guelph when second in the Sires Produce, extra distance will either work for or against her on Saturday
Other juveniles out to score an upset Champagne Stakes result at a nice price then include Cummings’ Sires Produce fourth placegetter Drago ($11), Fernhill Handicap winner from last Saturday over the same track and distance Riocetto ($12) and even $21 chance Shahad from the Gai Waterhouse stables due to jump from gate three with Hong Kong-bound Tommy Berry in the saddle.
