There may be a few queries over a Golden Slipper winning filly backing up in the Inglis Sires Produce Stakes just seven days later, but the punters don’t seem concerned this Australian Derby Day with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Overreach firming in the markets for the two-year-olds’ classic running this afternoon.
The talented daughter of Exceed And Excel posted her third win on the trot with a sweet Golden Slipper victory last weekend putting nearly two lengths on her closest rivals, Overreach now the odds-on favourite to step up to the 1400m and win today’s $500,000 Group 1 ATC Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).
Overreach opened around $1.60 in the ATC Sires Produce Stakes odds earlier in the week after drawing well in barrier six of 13 but the money has come in for her now and she’s been wound into $1.55.
She must handle the short back-up but so too are a number of these including the second pick Guelph ($10 into $11) from the Peter Snowden stables, the fellow Exceed And Excel filly having come from well back for a slashing fourth last weekend behind Overreach.
The genuine ATC Sires Produce Stakes betting market mover however has been Charlie Boy slashed from $26 right into $16 to improve on their eighth in the Slipper.
The Gerald Ryan-trained Myboycharlie colt was third to subsequent Slipper third placed Sweet Idea in the Silver Slipper Stakes first-up before their fourth in the Todman and the bookies are tipping them to return to form today getting up to a more favourable 1400m.
Also in their favour today on the firming Dead (5) track is their nice barrier two draw, Glyn Schofield retaining the ride, with the youngster having started from awkward gates for the past three runs – 8 from 12 in the Silver Slipper, 8 from 10 in the Todman and 12 from 16 in the Golden Slipper.
“He’s drawn a barrier for a change which makes a difference,” Ryan said.
“He feels good and has done well since the Slipper so I have no concerns about backing him up.”
