This afternoon one of the best weight-for-age races of the Melbourne Festival of Racing will run at Flemington Racecourse with a crack line-up of staying types set to face off in the 2013 Australian Cup– the updated betting odds for which are detailed below.
Running as Flemington Race 7 at 4:00pm the $1 million Group 1 Darley Australian Cup (2000m) is down to 12 contenders following the early scratching of #8 Éclair Surprise.
The latest Australian Cup odds meanwhile are led by the reigning Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon who remains steady at $4 to win second-up after resuming with a credible fourth to ace colt All Too Hard in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes over the 1400m two weeks back.
“The mail is he’s going better than before he won the Melbourne Cup,” Hong Kong-based jockey Brett Prebble, riding Green Moon today, said.
Hot on Green Moon’s heels in the Australian Cup betting markets meanwhile is Super Cool who continues to gain attention from the punters now at a quote of $4.40.
Drawn nicely in gate three with Michael Rodd to ride the three-year-old Fastnet Rock gelding, runner-up in the Victoria Derby during the spring, has been in flying form this time in and comes off a nice win over Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) from February 23 – form that trainer Mark Kavanagh believes will stack up.
“There was a lot of talk about the slow pace not suiting Fiveandahalfstar,” Kavanagh said of the Autumn Classic.
“But it was him who was in front, he made the pace. It was him who made it slow.
“Fiveandahalfstar outstayed us in the Derby, no doubt about that,” Kavanagh said.
“But last week we were a bit sharper and we got him.
“Hopefully we can continue on with that sharpness, and this track’s going to suit him.”
Other notable chances in the mix include Perth Group 1 winner Mr Moet steady at $5.50 after two nice runs in Melbourne including a second in the Peter Young last start, Fiveandahalfstar who has eased out from $8 to $8.50 and market mover Mawingo.
Anthony Freedman’s Doomben Cup winner, Tertullian stallion Mawingo, was as long as $10 on Friday but has been backed into $8.50 to win this race third-up.
Their Doomben Cup victory came three runs into their winter prep last year and they have had two promising runs this autumn when second in the CF Orr and a close fourth in the Peter Young.
