Connections of upset Australian Guineas winner Ferlax have not only confirmed the undefeated colt for the Randwick Guineas 2013 next start but have also booked a bookie with the Hong Kong-based Brett Prebble picking up the ride.
A son of Pentire, Ferlax has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks since their win on debut at Echuca in maiden race over 1200m last November.
After two summer wins at Benalla and Sale upon resuming they were stepped up to Group 1 company for the Australian Guineas seeing the mile for the first time in a true acid test at Flemington on March 2.
Not only did the young gun handle the step up in class and distance but they beat a field full of better fancied hopefuls when putting a half length on You’re So Good as a $16 outsider.
They will vie for another autumn elite level next start with their Mornington-based trainer Jim Conlan deciding on the $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) Saturday week at Warwick Farm for their next assignment.
Ridden by Stephen Baster in the Australian Guineas, Ferlax will undergo a jockey change for the Randwick Guineas with international performer, the Hong Kong-based Prebble set to take the reins.
“He’s a nice horse. He’s only a lightly-raced horse but he’s shown his ability,” Prebble said of Ferlax.
“They keep raising the bar and he keeps jumping it.”
As for the horse he rates the one to beat in the Randwick Guineas? The Gai Waterhouse-trained Pierro certainly has him worried after the star Lonhro colt returned with a win in the Hobartville Stakes last Saturday.
“He’s (Ferlax is) going to bump into the good ones up there including Gai’s horse Pierro,” Prebble said.
“It’s tough competition but he’s coming off a Group One win and he looks to be a horse going forward.”
Prebble also has two Group 1 rides this weekend in Melbourne partnering with the horse he rode to a Melbourne Cup victory last November Green Moon in the Australian Cup (2000m) and early market mover Spirit Of Boom in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m).
