Local Caulfield trainer Mick Price is preparing to saddle-up a double-pronged attack on Saturday’s Blue Diamond Fillies Preview with two unraced females stepping out for the defending winning horseman.
Price won the $120,000 Listed Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) (1000m) 12 months ago with his Red Ransom filly Malasun who scored the win in her debut trip to the races.
While Malasun didn’t make it all the way to the $1 million Group 1 Patinack Farm Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) the following month, Price was able to snare that feature win with another smart filly in Samaready atoning for the one he lost in 2003 after Roedean returned a positive swab.
Tomorrow he will set two more promising types down the Blue Diamond path with Kerr and Tango’s Daughter both set to have their maiden career runs in the BD Preview.
It is a tough first assignment for the unraced two-year-olds as they will come head to head with the current top fancies for next month’s $1 million feature in Daniel Clarken’s flying Perth filly Miracles Of Life and the Peter Snowden-trained Montsegur.
“It is always hard taking on horses that have raced and shown good ability,” Price’s stable foreman Mick Nolan said.
“They both have good natural ability but it is always a great advantage to have some race experience behind you.”
While neither has had an official hitout Nolan said Kerr and Tango’s Daughter worked well in their respective jumpouts at Caulfield recently and from what they showed there will have to be ridden very differently to one another on Saturday.
“Kerr shows good pace from the gates and should be able to go forward early from a nice gate, while Tango’s Daughter is likely to settle back and be finishing off over the latter stages,” he said.
Miracles Of Life and Montsegur are dominating the markets for tomorrow’s race as well as the Blue Diamond Stakes odds for February 23.
Miracles Of Life, who destroyed her rivals back east by nine lengths last time out, is $2.90 favourite for the Preview while the rails-drawn Montsegur is at a quote of $3.80.
Price’s first hopeful Kerr then occupies the third line of betting paying $7.50 to score an upset, the daughter of Stratum drawn ideally in barrier three with Samaready’s Blue Diamond hoop from last autumn Craig Newitt to ride.
Redoute’s Choice filly from Anabaa mare Tango Fire meanwhile is the $51 roughie of the pack jumping from gate five with Glen Boss in the saddle.
Kerr is also considered a genuine chance in the Blue Diamond Stakes 2013 up against the boys currently paying $21.
