Guy Walter’s dual Group 1 winning mare Streama is the top-rated entry among this year’s Myer Classic 2012 nominations, the females-only mile clash to run at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday as part of the Victoria Derby Day action.
A quartet of elite level features headline the Flemington racing action on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival this weekend, one of which is the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
Won 12 months ago by Hurtle Myrtle, this year’s Myer Classic is shaping up as a top showdown by a number of Group 1 performing mares including Streama.
Winner of the Flight Stakes – Australian Oaks double as a three-year-old last season the now four-year-old daughter of Stratum will be fourth-up for the season on Saturday having won her last start in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup Day.
Other notable Tristarc Stakes runners nominated for the Myer Classic 2012 then include John Thompson’s Tattersall’s Tiara winner Pear Tart (2nd) and the Chris Waller-trained multiple Group 2 champ Red Tracer (3rd)
“The Myer will be her third run in, she’s had the run the Melbourne way and she’ll improve off that,” Pear Tart’s trainer Thompson said.
“If the others haven’t improved off that, I know she has.”
Meanwhile Streama’s trainer Walter has also nominated for Skyerush, the Super Jet seven-year-old last seen running fourth in the Group 3 Tesio Stakes (1600m) on Cox Plate Day.
Along with Streama the other last-start winner in contention for the Myer Classic trophy this year is then Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra’s flying Reset five-year-old Star Of Giselle who snared her third straight win in the Tesio Stakes at Mooonee Valley last Saturday.
Other notable 2012 Myer Classic nominees include Grahame Begg’s 2011 Epsom Handicap winner Secret Admirer out to improve on her 11th in the Caulfield Cup, triple Group 1 winner Yosei last seen running a close third in the Toorak Handicap, and Toorak runner-up Spirit Song who finished third in the Tesio Stakes on the weekend.
See below for the full list of Myer Classic 2012 nominations, the final field due for release on Wednesday.
