Internationally performing mare King’s Rose has opened at the top of the odds for the 2012 Moonga Stakes this Saturday, the Peter Moody-trained galloper looking to secure the Caulfield Cup Day feature second-up for the spring.

King's Rose has opened the short-priced 2012 Moonga Stakes favourite on Caulfield Cup Day
The Redoute’s Choice five-year-old, formerly prepared in New Zealand by Jason Bridgman, has recorded four Group 1 minor placings for Moody since debuting for the stable in August last year.
Moody sent King’s Rose over to Singapore during our winter after she ran third to More Joyous in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m), but she could only manage to finish five and a half lengths away 11th to Xtension after getting caught in the crowd early and weakening late in the Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin.
King’s Rose resumed off a five month break, during which she underwent minor throat surgery to correct the same breathing problem Mosheen also suffered from, and caught the eye at Flemington on October 6 coming within three-quarters of a length when second to Hallowell Belle in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m).
Saturday she steps up to 1400m for the $150,000 Group 3 Moonga Stakes, formerly the Betfair Stakes, and is the current $2.80 favourite to win.
There are only two other horses under $10 in the Moonga Stakes odds this year with:
- #12 Full Of Spirit ($7) – Roger James’ Kiwi raider, this four-year-old Flying Spur mare is a Group 3 winner in Sydney and ran fourth to Streama in the Group 1 Australian Oaks during the autumn, won first-up back home this time in before running sixth in the Blazer Stakes behind Mosheen last time out from barrier 16 of 16, is wide again here in 13 of 13 but has class
- #4 Galah ($8) – Peter Snowden-trained Redoute’s Choice stallion was fourth first-up in the Gilgai Stakes, will like the 1400m better but hasn’t won a race since Derby Day last spring
Other possibles for an upset Moonga Stakes result on Saturday then include the Hawkes-trained veteran Happy Zero ($10) who ran third in the Stradbroke in Brisbane during the autumn, and Fastnet Rock four-year-old Amah Rock ($11) coming off a good third in the Listed Tavern Stakes over this distance at Flemington on October 6.
