Doncaster Mile 2012 Handicap Weights Released

On Monday weights were released for next month’s 2012 Doncaster Mile Handicap at Randwick, Gai Waterhouse’s dual injured Group 1 hero Descarado allocated the 58.5kg topweight of the 202 early entries.

Rangirangdoo is one of two former winners heading towards the 2012 Doncaster Mile this autumn

The $2 million Group 1 BMW Doncaster Mile (1600m) is one of the premier races on the annual Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival line-up and is set to run this year at Royal Randwick on Saturday April 21 along with the $550,000 Group 1 AJC Oaks (2400m).

Descarado is one of 15 Doncaster Mile nominees for Waterhouse, her shortest-priced hopeful in the horse racing betting markets being her champion mare More Joyous paying $15 to win through bookmaker.com.au and allocated 57.5kg, but will miss the autumn and the race due to injury.

Following Descarado in the 2012 Doncaster Mile Handicap odds is former champion Rangirangdoo, a $31 outsider in the bookmaker.com.au futures with 58kg.

Injury-plagued Pentire gelding Rangirangdoo has been performing below par this season finishing ninth in both of their Group 2 assignments at Rosehill during February, but premier Sydney horseman Chris Waller remains hopeful the seven-year-old can return to his Group 1 winning form that saw him win the 2010 Doncaster Mile.

Reigning Doncaster Mile winner Sacred Choice is also entered to vie for multiple wins in the classic, Joe Pride’s Choisir mare last seen finishing a disappointing 10^th behind her exciting stablemate Rain Affair in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on February 25.

Classy Commands four-year-old Rain Affair has been defeated once in their stunning 11-start career to date which has netted $685,900 in prize money.

Despite never having raced in a Group 1 affair Rain Affair has been handed 55.5kg in the Doncaster Mile handicaps equal with elite level performers including Waller’s Emirates Stakes winner Albert The Fat, Randwick Guineas champ Ilovethiscity, last year’s Doncaster Mile runner-up Love Conquers All, Cox Plate hero Pinker Pinker, Rekindled Interest and Stradbroke Handicap winner Sincero.

Pride said that the weight, which will be increased even more with a penalty if the ultra-consistent galloper wins their maiden Group 1 test in the $1 million Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington this weekend, all but rules them out of a Doncaster Mile bid.

“It’s pretty steep and they will give him a penalty if he wins the Newmarket, so any chance he had of running in the Doncaster has gone,” Pride said.

“He hasn’t even run in a Group One race yet.

“It’s way too much for him.

“That’s why we are running in the Newmarket.

“I think it’s his one and only chance to beat the handicapper.”

Following the release of weights Rain Affair is now rated just a $51 chance in the Doncaster Mile betting markets at bookmaker.com.au.

Doncaster Mile odds are still dominated by Atlantic Jewel ($6 bookmaker.com.au) and Manawanui ($8 bookmaker.com.au).

Mark Kavanagh’s stunning Thousand Guineas winner from last spring, Fastnet Rock filly Atlantic Jewel hasn’t been seen since her seven length romp in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Derby Day, and she gets into the Doncaster on the 52kg minimum.

Manawanui has been handed 1kg more with 53kg, Ron Leemon’s Golden Rose winning gelding last seen being allocated to second upon protest behind Wild And Proud in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill last Saturday.

Other highly-rated hopefuls and their recent weight allocations and odds are the Grahame Begg-trained Epsom Handicap champion Secret Admirer (54kg / $11), Flight Stakes winning Stratum filly Streama (52kg / $13) and Robert Smerdon’s brilliant Mosheen (52kg / $15).

Winner of the Crown Oaks during the spring, Mosheen proved herself against the boys last Saturday when she overcame the wet and her horror barrier 16 of 16 draw to become the first horse in history to win the Australian Guineas from a double-digit gate when beating home a crack field by an easy three lengths.
