Toowoomba galloper Glow Heart won’t start the favourite in this Saturday’s Sunshine Coast Guineas, but his trainer Ross Coveney also knows that he won’t be getting the generous odds that were available on the three-year-old last start when they scored a massive boilover at Ipswich.
Show A Heart gelding Glow Heart saluted as a $40 roughie in the $50,000 Provincial Cup (2150m) at Ipswich last start on June 18 beating home raging $2 favourite Grey Assignment by just a short-head.
Only sneaking into the Ipswich field as the first emergency following an early scratching from the race, Glow Heart will get their chance to prove the win was no fluke when they line up in the $100,000 Listed Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) at Caloundra this Saturday.
Due to be ridden by Nozi Tomizawa, who was aboard for their last-start victory, Glow Heart will face a tougher test this weekend.
For the Provincial Cup, which was their fourth career success from 14 starts, Glow Heart had an ideal barrier two draw and carted just 53kg to victory.
In the Sunshine Coast Guineas showdown, the three-year-old has drawn wide with barrier 14 of the 18-starter plus five emergency final field, and has a weight rise of 3kg to also overcome.
Still Coveney, a former grazier in central Queensland, holds high hopes the horse can step up to the challenge and continue their recent purple patch.
Prior to the Provincial Cup, Glow Heart ran a game third to Parameters at the Sunshine Coast over 2000m and they also have a strong record over the mile making the Guineas distance ideal.
Coveney, who has been training horses for just four years, has already achieved more with Glow Heart than he ever imagined.
Originally sold as a weanling for $15,000 in 2008, Glow Heart was later picked up by Coveney for a steal at $1,800 at a Magic Millions tried horse sale in November of 2010.
“I’ve only got five horses in work at Toowoomba, but I have a few boxes which I rent out,” Coveney said.
“I bought him (Glow Heart) because I just liked his breeding and he was cheap. I like cheap horses.”
Win, lose or draw in the Guineas Glow Heart is heading towards the spelling paddock next month and is unlikely to be a spring carnival prospect.
“I’ve decided to take a break from training in August and this bloke will have a spell with me as well,” Coveney confirmed.
It is an in-form field of hopefuls for this year’s Sunshine Coast Guineas, other last-start conquerors looking for back-to-back winter wins including the Brian Smith-trained Mr Tweed seeking their fourth victory on the trot and third at the Caloundra track, Bel Esprit colt Laudit coming off a strong win in the Caloundra Cup Next Saturday Class 1 (1200m), Michael Moroney’s Victorian raider Shenzhou Steeds and Epic.
A stablemate of Grey Assignment, the horse Glow Heart defeated in an upset at Ipswich, Epic also enjoyed a narrow win on Ipswich Cup Day last-start.
In a nice form turnaround, well-bred Stratum colt Epic was able to hold on in the final-stride to defeat Fire Up Fifi in the $50,000 TL Cooney Handicap (1350m).
Although Saturday will be Epic’s first start over 1600m, their Eagle Farm-based trainer Schweida believes they will step up without issue and are the horse to beat in Guineas despite drawing double digits with gate 12.
“I thought the 1350m might be a bit sharp for him,” Schweida said after their Ipswich win.
“A race like the Caloundra (Sunshine Coast) Guineas will be a nice race.”
