Skilled has drawn barrier 16 for the Queensland Guineas

The Brisbane campaign of the Peter Snowden trained Skilled continues to be hampered by bad barriers after the talented three year old drew gate 16 of 23 for the Group Two Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Skilled has now drawn poorly for all three of his winter starts in Brisbane. Skilled started from gate 14 of 16 in the Bet Fred Classic and got gate 22 of 22 at his last in the Daybreak Lover Plate. If all the emergencies are scratched from the Guineas Skilled will start from gate 13 of 18.

Skilled will again be partnered by Darley stable jockey Kerrin McEvoy.

Falino, who won the Fred Best Classic, a traditional lead up event for the Derby, drew gate 18 and will be ridden by Tim Clark.

Falino was well tried in the QTC Cup, however he failed to show the dash that he displayed against the three year olds, against the older horses.

Run for Levi is an interesting runner for Patinack Farm trainer John Thompson. Run for Levi ran second to Anacheeva in the Group One Caulfield Guineas during the Melbourne spring carnival, however he has been unable to finish in the placing’s in his last seven starts.

Run for Levi pushed forward in the Caulfield Guineas and if Thompson chooses the same tactics again, he will be benefited by having noted front running jockey Nash Rawiller in the saddle.

Lee Freedman will be attempting to win his third Queensland Guineas with Smokin’ Joey after he tasted success in the race in 2003 with Tru Glo and in 1994 with Paris Lane. Smokin’ Joey had bug wraps on him after he won his first start in a race in Victoria a year ago, however he has not won a race since. However he showed he may be ready to turn the corner with an impressive last start second behind Adebisi at Doomben.
