Black Caviar make history winning the 2011 Newmarket Handicap
Bel Esprit four-year-old and World Champion sprinter Black Caviar officially took her record-breaking succession of wins to 10 to become the first Australian racehorse to win their first 10 starts in a row on metro tracks.
Now a triple Group 1 winner, Black Caviar’s victory in the Newmarket Handicap was also so notable for the fact she also broke the weight-carrying record with 58kg on her back.
Before her the heaviest weight carried by a Newmarket Handicap winning mare was 56.5kg when Maybe Mahal won in 1978.
After starting odds-on at $1.20 through Luxbet, Black Caviar burst out of the barriers well with regular rider Luke Nolen in the mount and was never in doubt.
In front of a big crowd that came to see Black Caviar make history, the ease and calm demure of her win was simply stunning.
Early Crystal Lily found the front up the middle of the field but not for long as Black Caviar coasted to the front.
Nolen didn’t try to embarrass Black Caviar’s rivals, obviously not hitting top gear and leaving plenty of mystery in the minds of her fans as to just exactly what she is capable of.
Leaving them behind as she is now famous for, Black Caviar ($1.20) beat roughie Crystal Lily by three and a half lengths while Peter Snowden’s mare Beaded finished off the winning Newmarket Handicap Trifecta.
Winning in 1.7.36, Black Caviar ran one of the fastest 1200m sprints down the Flemington straight.
Without enough adjectives to describe the freakish talent of Black Caviar, it is clear Australian racing has a new champion to cheer on and Moody plans to keep the superlative sprinter right here.
The 2011 Newmarket Handicap result gave Moody back-to-back wins in the feature having won 12 months ago with Wanted, also ridden by top stable jockey Nolen.
Black Caviar is now unbeaten in 10, today’s victory pushing her career earnings to close to $2.3 million.
A possible trip to Queensland for the Group 1 sprints during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival could now be on the cards for Black Caviar.
The racing action at Flemington is far from over with the 2011 Australian Cup up next, so head over to Luxbet now and get in on the action!
