The $200,000 Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) is one of the main attractions on the Lightning Stakes Day programme this year and Luxbet have generous odds now available on the field.
Unsurprisingly, 2011 Australian Guineas hopeful Enjin Number Nine has opened at the top of the CS Hayes Stakes odds currently paying $3.60 through Luxbet.
Coming off back-to-back wins, Zenno Rob Roy gelding Enjin Number Nine caught the attention of punters last start when they scored an excellent 2 ½ length win in the Listed Manfred Stakes (1300m) at Sandown on February 9.
Being able to defeat the likes of dual Group 1 winner Star Witness went a long way in proving Enjin Number Nine’s potential to become a star this autumn season.
Set to start from barrier five with Glen Boss in the mount, Enjin Number Nine is actually having his first start at his home track at Flemington on Saturday and is definitely the horse to beat in the CS Hayes this year.
Enjin Number Nine is co-trained by Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, who also prepare Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily.
Crystal Lily is also running at Flemington on Saturday when in a daunting first-up run she faces the likes of Black Caviar and Hay List in the $750,000 Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m).
In the CS Hayes Stakes Enjin Number Nine is set to defend his record against many of the rivals he hammered in the Manfred Stakes.
Manfred Stakes’ runner-up Bullbars is one, the Peter Snowden-trained Elusive Quality colt suffering a blow with a wide barrier 15 draw for Saturday, as is Manfred fourth placegetter Liveandletdie.
Bullbars is at $15 in the CS Hayes Stakes odds at Luxbet, while the Mark Kavanagh-trained Street Cry colt Liveandletdie (barrier seven) is paying $18.
2010 Caulfield Guineas winner Anacheeva (barrier eight) and last-start champion in the Group 2 D’Urban Stakes Dusty Star (barrier four) are the biggest threats to Enjin Number Nine on Saturday installed as the equal $6 second favourites in the CS Hayes betting at Luxbet.
Peter Moody’s Anabaa colt Anacheeva resumed with a first-up seventh in the Listed Zeditave Stakes (1200m) on January 26, but better suited to the 1400m of the CS Hayes and sure to have improved with the run has real claims.
General Nediym three-year-old Dusty Star is out to make it three straight on Saturday after the talented youngster won the Elms Handicap at this track and distance on January 15 before their upset win in the D’Urban Stakes also over 1400m.
Other three-year-olds in the market include Zeditave Stakes’ runner-up Spirited Eagle ($8), Dean Lawson’s local Group winner Mr Chard ($13) and last season’s AAMI Vase third placegetter Hollowlea ($16).
The 2011 C S Hayes Stakes is due to jump at 3:30pm (AEDST) as Flemington Race 5 on Saturday and is shaping up as a promising Australian Guineas indicator.
