The Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) is shaping up as a one-horse race with the only notable danger to Peter Snowden’s unbeaten colt being the now-withdrawn Peter Moody-trained filly One Last Dance.
Subsequently Sepoy’s price to become the 2011 Blue Diamond Stakes winner and maintain his impressive career record has firmed right in, Luxbet now paying $1.80 on Sepoy in their Blue Diamond odds.
Sepoy will be only the sixth odds-on favourite in Blue Diamond history, the first since the David Hayes-trained Raise A Rhythm ($1.90) who ran fourth to stablemate Canonise in the 1991 Blue Diamond Stakes.
Rancher, the 1982 Blue Diamond Stakes winner, is the shortest ever Blue Diamond favourite at $1.40 and the only odds-on in the Blue Diamond betting who went on to win.
The shortest-priced Blue Diamond winner in recent years was Alinghi in 2004 who started the favourite, but not odds-on.
Odds are that Sepoy will become the second Saturday week.
In other news jockey Mark Zahra, aboard for all three of Sepoy’s career wins to date, has lost the mount on the star juvenile for the Blue Diamond Stakes.
Kerrin McEvoy will ride Sepoy in the Blue Diamond Stakes due to their contract with owner Sheik Mohammed.
One Last Dance’s stablemate Hallowell Belle has shortened into the $9 second-favourite at Luxbet in their Blue Diamond betting markets.
Starcraft filly Hallowell Belle most recently ran third in the Blue Diamond Prelude behind Once Last Dance at Caulfield last Saturday.
The slightly longer-price on Hallowell Belle than the $6.50 One Last Dance was paying is in part because they are yet to have secured a spot in the maximum 16-starter Blue Diamond final field, Hallowell Belle sitting 18th on the order of entry.
