Sydney raider Bid Spotter took out the 2011 Hobart Cup in an upset result on Sunday February 13, the Graeme Rogerson-trained gelding one of three long-priced roughies in the winning Hobart Cup Trifecta this year.
The $300,000 Group 3 Hobart Cup (2200m) is Tasmania’s richest race for thoroughbreds and Sunday’s result was the sixth consecutive year an interstate runner claimed victory in the chief event at the annual Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
In a career-best performance Redoute’s Choice five-year-old Bid Spotter ($14.90) beat home Summer Cup winner Organised ($18) by a half length while Caulfield-based galloper Davcon ($19.30) came in third a further half length away
The top three placegetters held off the likes of dual Country Cups winner Red Buttons who ran fourth and $5.60 favourite Dream Pedlar who could only manage fifth.
Given a beautiful ride by jockey Michael Rodd, Bid Spotter went wide on the home straight powering away to win in fine style.
Bid Spotter has now won six of his 26 career starts, Sunday’s victory boosting their total earnings to over $437,000 in prize money.
The gelding will stay in Tasmania for the $225,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) to be run on Wednesday February 23.
