A bumper eight-race programme will run at the Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday for Light Fingers Stakes Day and one of the quality races early on at the autumn meet is the $100,000 Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m).
The 2011 Canonbury Stakes is set to run as Randwick Race 2 on Saturday jumping at 1:43pm (AEDST) and has drawn a final field of 10 two-year-old colts and geldings.
In a wide open betting market a number of runners are battling for favouritism with #3 Stagger the current $3.50 top elect over #2 Wild And Proud paying around $3.80.
Brian Buckley’s Snippetson colt Stagger caught the eye of punters and the bookies at Canberra on February 1 when they ran away to an incredible 12 ½ length victory in the Black Opal 2YO Handicap (1000m).
Stagger, however, is drawn out wide in barrier 10 for Saturday which could be a disadvantage for the colt.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Wild And Proud has fared better with barrier four as the Snowland colt contests their second career start after running third behind Smart Missile on debut in the Listed NSW Breeders Plate (1000m) back on October 2.
However, looking for more value in these two-year-old races often proves successful and we are tipping an upset with #4 Written Consent to win the 2011 Canonbury Stakes.
The Grahame Begg-trained Written Consent has drawn ideally in barrier two for Saturday as the colt looks to improve on their close second in a 1000m 2YO Maiden at Warwick Farm on debut on January 26.
With less weight on their back on Saturday and a far better draw after they jumped from gate 11 on debut, we think Written Consent will show great improvement and score a decent win at tidy odds through Luxbet.
Stagger’s debut win was too impressive to write them off completely on Saturday so we will add them in the Quinella.
To finish third, debutant Rock Monster for Gerald Ryan with the inside running is hard to go past.
The Fastnet Rock colt showed they were ready with a winning jumpout at Rosehill on February 1 over 900m and looks to have a good season ahead.
