Tasmanian Derby Day at Hobart Racecourse kicks off the Group racing action of the 2011 Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival this Saturday, the meet featuring three quality stakes showdowns including the $90,000 Wrest Point Strutt Stakes (1200m).
The 2011 Strutt Stakes final field has attracted 10 three-year-old fillies including early favourite Darren Weir’s in-form daughter of Bel Esprit Le Bel Away.
Le Bel Away is seeking her third straight win on Saturday having won the Adelaide Cup (1800m) at Morphettville on January 12 before running away to score an easy two length victory in the Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Launceston last start on January 27.
The horse that ran second to Le Bel Away in the Thousand Guineas, Lee Freedman’s Domesday filly Exchanges is the other top fancy in the Strutt Stakes this year.
Exchanges comes into Saturday’s showdown in career best form having won the Premier Signs Handicap (1600m) at Sandown on January 12 before the Thousand Guineas.
Also backing up from the Thousand Guineas are third and fourth placegetters Winay Wayna and the lightly-raced Tough Chik, both daughters of US sire Tough Speed.
Other notable runners looking for an upset in the Strutt Stakes on Saturday include Tasmanian Guineas third placegetter Magnetosphere and Leigh Child’s Cranbourne-trained Jelly Baby having just her third career start, both drawn ideally in barriers two and one respectively.
The 2011 Wrest Point Strutt Stakes is scheduled as Hobart Race 7 on Saturday, the meeting headlined by the Group 3 Tasmanian Derby (2200m) where Hobart Guineas winner Ludka and runner-up Tiger Won’t Tell are set to face off again.
