The action of the 2011 Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival gets underway this Sunday January 23 with Hobart Guineas Day at Tattersall’s Park featuring an excellent line-up of races including the highlight event at the meet, the $90,000 Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m).
Eighteen three-year-olds have been nominated for the 2011 Hobart Guineas including Gai Waterhouse’s classy grey filly Teardrop Rock.
Daughter of Fastnet Rock, Teardrop Rock is yet to finish out of the money in her six career starts that have produced four wins and two second place finishes including a last-start victory over 1800m at Randwick on January 8 where Teardrop Rock carried a hefty 58kg to victory.
In-form hoop Craig Newitt, formerly a jockey in Tasmania, has secured the mount on Teardrop Rock in the 2011 Betfair Hobart Guineas.
Waterhouse is considering backing Teardrop Rock up in the $150,000 Group 3 Tasmanian Derby (2200m) on February 5 before the filly contests the $150,000 Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) at Launceston on February 17.
The other top-liner in this season’s Hobart Guineas is Keep The Faith gelding Socks who took out the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) at Launceston on January 6.
Tasmanian Guineas’ runner-up Second Dozen has also been nominated for Sunday’s feature at Hobart.
Other notable runners entered for the 2011 Hobart Guineas include three from the stables of Mornington-based trainer Lee Freedman who has entered Domesday filly Exchanges, the improving Giggleswick and Ludka.
