2010 Epsom Handicap winner Captain Sonador is on track for the $400,000 Magic Millions Cup on January 15 after a strong win in the $100,000 Goldmarket Handicap at the Gold Coast on Sunday.
Four-year-old Captain Sonador, who has a career to date of 26 starts for 6 wins, 3 seconds and 4 thirds and $699,500 in prize money, almost didn’t run on the rain-affected track for the Goldmarket with trainer Roger Milne even considering pulling the plug on the whole campaign.
But after the win from Steel Lips and Phelan Ready in the Goldmarket over 1300m on the Gold Coast track, Captain Sonador looks set for the Magic Millions Cup over 1400m.
“It wasn’t dominant, it was tradesman,” jockey Glen Boss said after the Goldmarket win.
“I think if he’s ridden a bit quieter, he’s more explosive.
“He had 60kg and he was first-up over 1300m, so he’s got more improvement because he’s a big colt.”
After the Magic Millions campaign Captain Sonador will probably have a short break before going to Sydney to prepare for the Doncaster Mile on April 16 at Randwick.
