Playcidium Mint Claims Upset Win over Black Felix in 2010 Lee Steere Classic

Craig Wright’s promising filly Playcidium Mint claimed an upset win in the $125,000 Group 3 Lee Steere Classic (1400m) at Ascot on Saturday, narrowly defeating the hot favourite Black Felix in the Perth Summer Racing Carnival feature after they made it a thrilling two horse run to the line.

Three-year-old Foreplay filly Playcidium Mint was coming off a strong win over 1200m at Pinjarra and proved she could step up in class winning the 2010 Lee Steere Classic ahead of a classy field of fellow three-year-olds.

Ridden by Troy Turner, Playcidium Mint ($11) was slow out of the barriers but quickly made up the ground and hit the line hard, managing to beat Black Felix ($2.50) by a nose, with $26 roughie Veracious finishing off the trifecta a length back from the winner.

Black Felix and jockey Paul Harvey had an unlucky run from the far outside barrier 12, getting caught three wide without cover, making their close second a very brave performance as Playcidium Mint put her head down on the line to steal victory.

It was a disappointing run for Even Astar, the $4.60 second elect coming in a distant seventh five lengths away after over-racing early from the front.

Playcidium Mint has now won two of her four career starts for $95,350 in prize money, Saturday’s win giving her owners their second Lee Steere Classic success after they won with Euro in 2007.
