During the annual Ascot Summer Racing Carnival, which is the feature carnival during the summer racing season, the headline event is the 2010 Festival of Perth Racing taking place over three bumper days at Ascot Racecourse and featuring an elite line-up of Group races.
This year’s Festival of Perth Racing gets underway on Saturday November 20 with WA’s first Group 1 feature and richest race on the Perth Racing calendar, the $1 million Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m).
The 2010 Railway Stakes is sponsored by Carlton Draught and has drawn a final field of 18 quality gallopers including defending champion Sniper’s Bullet, recent R.J. Peters Stakes winner God Has Spoken and veteran runner Black Piranha.
Other highlights on the Railway Stakes Day card include the Listed Placid Arc Stakes (1200m), Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) and the Listed Carbine Club WA Stakes (1400m).
Day two of the Festival takes place on Saturday November 27 when Ascot hosts the $750,000 Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).
The 2010 Winterbottom Stakes is sponsored by the Burswood Entertainment Complex and the current favourite to win the feature sprint showdown is reigning champion Ortensia.
Other horses likely to contest the feature that are popular with the punters in the early betting markets include Prince of Wales Stakes winner Waratahs Secret, Rick Worthington’s consistent Sydney sprinter Whitefriars and the Mick Price-trained Bel Esprit four-year-old True Persuasion.
Two quality Listed races are also planned for Winterbottom Stakes Day, with the Aquanita Stakes (1800m) and the Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m) both presenting prime betting opportunities.
The Festival of Perth Racing comes to a close on Saturday December 4 with celebrations headlined by the second Group 1 feature of the carnival, the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m).
The 2010 Kingston Town Classic is a prime middle-distance run that attracts quality gallopers both locally and from interstate.
A field of runners similar to the Railway Stakes will line-up in the Kingston Town Classic this year including the great Sniper’s Bullet as well as WA Guineas winner Playing God.
The other Group race feature of Kingston Town Classic Day not to miss is the $125,000 Group 3 Lee Steere Classic (1400m) while the Listed GA Towton Cup (2200m) is another great event on the programme.
