Following the action of the 2010 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, the next big event of the four-day Flemington Melbourne Cup Carnival will be Crown Oaks Day on Thursday, November 2.
The headline event at the Melbourne Cup Carnival Day 3 meeting is the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m), which has attracted a final field of 13 three-year-old fillies.
Betting on the 2010 Crown Oaks is wide open, with four runners at single figure odds to win.
Currently the short-priced favourite for the fillies feature is Brazilian Pulse.
The Michael Moroney-trained daughter of Captain Rio is coming off consistent spring form having finished second in the Edward Manifold Stakes, third in the Thousand Guineas and a last start win in the Wakeful Stakes over 2000m at Flemington.
On Thursday Brazilian Pulse will be ridden by Craig Williams, due to jump from barrier eight.
The other early favourites in the Crown Oaks field are:
- Tim Martin’s Encosta De Lago filly Sasa (barrier 11) despite her longest distanced win being only 1300m
- The David Hayes-trained Precious Lorraine (barrier seven) coming off a gallant fourth place finish in the AAMI Vase
- Danny O’Brien’s Savabeel filly Placement (barrier three) drawn well and coming off a second to Brazilian Pulse in the Wakeful Stakes
The Races.com.au team, however, rate $10 chance Yosei as an excellent chance to win at good odds through Luxbet.
Punters are shying away from the Stuart Webb-trained winner of the Thousand Guineas after her last place finish in the Myer Classic, however if the track is Slow or better she can rise and improve against a field of her own age rivals on Thursday.
Other notable runners in the Crown Oaks on Thursday include Thousand Guineas runner-up Heartsareforlove drawn on the rails, known wet tracker Dizlago and one-time favourite Shamrocker also drawn well in barrier two.
The 2010 Crown Oaks is scheduled as Race 6 at Flemington on Thursday and is due to jump at 2:55pm (AEDST).
