The $300,000 Wakeful Stakes (2000m), held as part of the elite line-up of races on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington this Saturday, has attracted a top-class field of fillies including the two favourites for the Crown Oaks.
The 2010 Wakeful Stakes capacity final field features 18 three-year-old fillies plus four emergencies with Shamrocker and Dizlago heading the entries as the equal $5 favourites in the 2010 Crown Oaks betting markets at Luxbet.
Danny O’Brien’s improving filly Shamrocker has drawn ideally in barrier three and looks set to retain favouritism to win the $1 million Crown Oaks Thursday week as her main danger, Dizlago, has suffered a wide barrier 15 draw.
Jockey James Winks will continue his association with Shamrocker in the Wakeful on Saturday.
The Lee Freedman-trained Encosta De Lago filly Dizlago is coming off a smart win in over 2000m at Caulfield in the Sportingbet Stakes, but has a tough test against a crack field from a wide barrier in the Wakeful.
Sportingbet Stakes’ runner-up Placement is also backing up in the Wakeful Stakes on Saturday.
The promising Danny O’Brien-trained Savabeel filly is yet to taste victory in her 10 career starts, but having drawn well in barrier two is a top chance to Place.
Another top Wakeful Stakes fancy that has suffered a blow drawing poorly is the Peter Snowden-trained Divorces, the daughter of Domesday set to jump from the outside barrier 18.
Other notable fillies in the Wakeful Stakes field this year include Michael Moroney’s Thousand Guineas placegetter Brazilian Pulse (barrier 11), the Gai Waterhouse-trained Zutara out wide in barrier 19 and Tim Martin’s quality runner Sasa also suffering a horror barrier 22 draw.
The 2010 Wakeful Stakes is scheduled as Race 3 at Flemington on Saturday and with betting markets on all the Victoria Derby Day features set to open shortly, now is the time to head to Luxbet and open an account with this trusted Tabcorp-owned online bookmaker!
