Peter Snowden’s classy colt Retrieve has won the first Group status race on the card at Caulfield Cup Day today, enjoying victory over a field of top three-year-olds in the $125,000 Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m).
Retrieve went out as the clear cut favourite paying about $2.20 through [sportsbet] with loads of money coming in for him leading up to the race.
In an eventful jump for Race 4, Shadowofexcellence reared up in the barriers and missed the start by over five lengths. Pitt Street was also restless in the gates and encountered early trouble.
Retrieve, however, settled into around fourth sport well with Kerchings taking the lead, overracing.
Snowden’s other runner Yulalona sat in second spot, while Retrieve and jockey Mark Zahra enjoyed a lovely ride.
On the home turn Kerchings kept the lead but not for long as Almindoro and Retrieve raced up.
Retrieve managed to get to the front, Digital Fortress closing in on the outside.
Under pressure, Retrieve dug deep and got the job done for the favourite backers, scoring a three-quarter length win over Almindoro ($20), who put in a mighty run, with Digital Fortress ($10) snaring third.
Retrieve and runner-up Almindoro are both heading towards the Victoria Derby on Saturday October 30, and connections of both three-year-olds will be pleased with their efforts today on such a heavy-going track.
Retrieve has now won four of their eight career starts, displaying versatility and brilliant form in both Sydney and Melbourne this spring, sure to shorten in the Victoria Derby betting markets open now at [sportsbet].
The next Caulfield Cup Day event will be Race 5 – the $200,000 Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m) due to jump at 2:00pm (AEDST).
Soul will start the odds-on favourite, but there is great value to be found backing General Truce.
Check out the odds now at [sportsbet] and get ready for Race 8 – the Caulfield Cup!
