British galloper Muir has become the first of prominent racehorse owner Lloyd William’s 2010 Melbourne Cup aspirants to win on Australian turf when the five-year-old won at Sandown on Wednesday.
Muir, a son of boom Irish sire Galileo, is one of 13 horses trained by Robert Hickmott for Williams still vying for a spot in the 150th Melbourne Cup Field on Tuesday November 2 at Flemington after first declarations were taken earlier in the week.
Williams has invested millions of dollars on his contingent of European gallopers being prepared for the $6 million Melbourne Cup as he attempts his fourth victory in the feature race.
Just A Dash (1981), What A Nuisance (1985) and Efficient (2007) are the Melbourne Cup winners owned by Williams, Efficient recently ruled out of the 2010 Cup due to ongoing injury concerns.
After two unsuccessful runs at Flemington and Caulfield this year, Muir finally claimed his maiden Australian win when the $3.30 favourite held strong to claim victory in the Winooka Handicap (2100m) at Sandown.
Sportsbet currently have Muir as a $101 chance in their early Melbourne Cup betting markets.
